NETexponent attends SES - For Search Engine Marketing & Optimization

Search Engine Strategies (SES) is the leading global conference & expo series that keeps online marketers informed about search engine advertising, including optimization and marketing issues. Recently a conference was held in New York City from April 10 – 13th. Several of NETexponent team members were in attendance and with presentations focusing from the more basic like “How to get free "organic" traffic by building a site that pleases search engines and your visitors” to more involved learning such as “What's coming next in the constantly evolving world of web search, and how you can profit from those changes” the consensus at NETexponent is that SES was a valuable conference and we look forward to implementing information (particularly what we learned about optimization through innovative ideas in search engine marketing) taken from the conference into our client’s search programs.

Google Testing PPA Waters - The end of affiliate programs as we know it?

In March of 2007, Google announced that they would be testing a new PPA Advertising Product. Until now, Google has primarily sold cost-per-click, or CPC ads

An alternative to the CPC setup is PPA, and this is what Google is currently testing.

PPA requires an additional level of complexity in the ad network. Previously, Google delivered a user to a website, and sent a bill for the click (CPC). Now, Google needs to verify that an “action” has occurred by receiving confirmation back from the advertiser.

The advertiser will have an incentive not to confirm the action, but Google will be able to easily adjust for this. Like CPC ads, PPA ads will be ranked by profitability to Google. Google needs only to calculate the average value of a click to a PPA advertiser, and those ads can then be ranked by profitability. CPC and PPA ads could even be mixed, although Google is not yet doing this.

For our clients, NETexponent would like to stress that Google PPA advertising is still in beta, and any opinion we have could change as the product develops.

That being said - NETexponent does NOT believe any hype that Google PPA will be the end of affiliate programs as we know it. We feel that Google PPA may (and probably will) act as compliment to client’s affiliate and search programs – and will not replace them.

Google PPA can’t give advertiser the same control that other affiliate programs can, particularly on items such as order quality and brand control. Currently, advertisers will not have control over where their ads will appear over the Google ad network, which can compromise brand integrity and has the propensity to generate orders of poorer quality.

We welcome clients to contact us if interested in testing or finding out more about Google PPA. Please Note – as of now, Google PPA testing is by invite only and requires that Google PPA tracking tags be installed on confirmation pages.
